The Statue Of Unity is a statue of the Indian statesman, founding and establishing father of Republic India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (1875– 1950) in the state of Gujarat, India. It is the world’s tallest statue with a standing height of 182 meters (597 ft). It is situated on a riverine island called Sadhu Bet facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the river Narmada in Kevadiya region, 100 kilometers (62 miles) southeast of the city of Vadodara.

The Statue Of Unity is the present-day world’s tallest statue. This is the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel which was introduced to the world on Oct 31st, 2018 on his 143rd birth anniversary by the prime minister of India Sir. Narendra Modi.

Who Designed The Statue Of Unity?

This Statue of Unity was designed by Ram Vanji Sutar who is one of the very famous sculptures and he was the one who has also created the Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Indian Parliament.

Who Constructed The Statue Of Unity?

The construction of this project was managed by Turner Construction(an America’s largest construction management company), Michael Graves and Associates(a famous American architectural design group) and the Meinhardt Group(one of the world’s famous construction company). It took 56 months to complete & 15 months for planning & 40 months for construction.

The world’s tallest statue was constructed by Larsen & Toubro Limited, commonly known as L&T, is one of the largest Indian multi-national firms and leading construction company in India.

A Chinese workshop Jiangxi Tongqing Metal Handicrafts Limited (or TQ Art foundry) was chosen by Larsen & Toubro Limited to mould the bronze cladding for the statue.

Malaysia-based Eversendai, which built Dubai’s acclaimed Burj Al Arab and Burj Khalifa structures, was given the agreement for the steel system.


Who Initiated And Funded The Statue Of Unity Project?

The initiation of the world’s tallest statue was done by then serving as Chief Minister of Gujarat, Sir. Narendra Modi on the 138th anniversary of Patel’s birth i.e on 31 October 2013. Later, after the funding and all necessary decisions were taken Larsen & Toubro Limited, the largest Indian infrastructure company won the contract to initiate the development of the Statue Of Unity on 31 October 2014.

The funding was done mostly by the money raised by the Government of Gujarat with the allotted amount of about ₹6 billion (US$84 million). In the 2014–15 Union Budget of India, about ₹2 billion (US$28 million) were allocated for the construction of the statue. Some funds were also contributed by PSUs under CSR assistance scheme to cope up with the total fund.


What Was The Total Cost For Building The Statue Of Unity?

Larsen & Toubro Limited, the largest Indian infrastructure company won the contract on 27 October 2014 for its lowest bid of ₹29.89 billion (US$420 million) for the design, construction and maintenance. They started the development on 31 October 2014. In the initial period of the construction, ₹13.47 billion (US $186 Millions) were for building the main statue, ₹2.35 billion (US $32 Millions) for the exhibition hall and convention centre, ₹830 million (US $11 Millions) for the bridge connecting the memorial to the mainland and ₹6.57 billion for the maintenance of the structure for 15 years after its completion.

1. The Statue Of Unity will have a viewing gallery at 153 m, which has the ability to accommodate up to 200 visitors at a go and will offer an expansive view of the dam and that of the astonishing environment surrounding it.

2. The Statue Of Unity, the Worlds Tallest Statue, will be able to withstand wind velocity up to 60 m/sec, vibration and earthquake upto 6.5 on Ritcher Scale.
