We all know that after Reliance Jio entered the telecom market it has revolutionized the telecom network in India. Before people had to pay Rs. 300 to 400 for 1 GB for a monthly data pack but now people are getting 1 GB data daily for Rs. 399 only that also for three months. Jio showed us that how data can be cheaper by providing unlimited data and the best data plans on market. It is also ranked number one for downloading speed by TRAI. After capturing the telecom market Jio has started a new era of innovation for feature phones by announcing the launch of an affordable ‘intelligent’ JioPhone. More than 35 lakh people already pre-booked the phone within 24 hours. So, today the post is not about the Jio feature phone but about the unique operating system ‘KaiOS’ installed on the phone which is not common in all feature phones.
What is KaiOS?
KaiOS is a modified version of Firefox OS which is based on Mozilla’s open source B2G OS. It is a new operating system for mobile. It combines the power of a smartphone with the affordability of a feature phone. KaiOS is built for those who cannot afford or do not want to use a smartphone. It will open up new opportunities for individuals, their families, and communities by making access to advanced digital services a reality for everyone. The operating system has an optimized user interface for non-touch phones.
KaiOS comes with a store for apps named ‘KaiOS Plus’ based on HTML5 coding but in case of Jio Feature Phone, it will come with Jio store. The apps are built purely with HTML/JS/CSS stack that means the developers can make apps of any web application/website that is mobile friendly with just minor modifications by using the inbuilt Firefox OS webIDE developer tool to build apps for KaiOS. Apart from such powerful features, KaiOS uses little memory and energy, allowing it to power affordable devices with a long battery life.
In case of the Jio Feature Phone, it will have Facebook and Youtube app preinstalled. The support of Whatsapp and Uber will come soon but it will take time. In a phone of 512 RAM, it is not possible to run fully developed applications as we get in Google Play Store. So, the applications will be web based that means you will get the interface of the website. For example:- Facebook (m.facebook.com) in the app but not the exact Facebook application. KaiOS works with chipsets from all the major manufacturers and provides developers and carriers with a range of innovative back-end services.
Let’s have a look at the main features, specifications, and partners of KaiOS:
Main features – Store for apps, Games, Wi-Fi, Social and messaging apps, Accessibility, Video calls (coming soon), Camera and Gallery, Radio.
Specifications – 4G/LTE, Wi-Fi, NFC, GPS, HTML5 open standard.
- Carriers: Jio, AT&T, Sprint, TMobile,
Telus, Bell, Videotron
- OEM (Original equipment manufacturer): Alcatel and more to be announced this year.
KaiOS is headquartered in Hong Kong with additional offices in the USA, Taiwan, China, India, France, and Brazil, together with housing a team of over 170 people. The operating system already powers phones in Canada, the United States, and India through partnerships with Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, and now with Jio. Before the end of the year, people in ten more countries will get access to the powerful suite of KaiOS features as per information from the team. So, it is a small team working on a great innovative idea whose future is bright and after collaborating with Reliance Jio it will achieve more success in future.
