KaiOS

What is KaiOS?

This post is all about everything you need to know about this awesome OS(operating system) that runs on smart feature phones. This awesome and advanced operating system brings smart capabilities like artificial intelligence, playing awesome games, video calling, NFC integrated digital payments, etc. which is usually found in a normal smartphone but with this OS these are all packed in a feature phone. KaiOS turns a normal feature phone to a smart feature phone due to its sophisticated microenvironment webIDE technology.

KaiOS is a modified version of Firefox OS which is based on Mozilla’s open source B2G OS. It is a new operating system for mobile. It combines the power of a smartphone with the affordability of a feature phone. KaiOS is built for those who cannot afford or do not want to use a smartphone. It will open up new opportunities for individuals, their families, and communities by making access to advanced digital services a reality for everyone. The operating system has an optimized user interface for non-touch phones.

This OS manages all applications and peripheral hardware and accesses the central processing unit (CPU) for memory or storage purposes in a feature phone that too with an awesome microenvironment technology which makes it run well in a device with low storage and RAM.

In which language is KaiOS written?

Will make it simple and answer it in simple making it easy to understand for even a non-tech guy.

This OS is a fully Linux-based mobile operating system that merges the power of a smartphone with the affordability of a feature phone. This is purely written in CSS(Cascading Style Sheet), Javascript and HTML5(Hypertext Markup Language Version 5). This is the main reason as for why this particular OS is so lightweight, user-friendly and device battery backup friendly.

KaiOS Plus Store – The dedicated app store for KaiOS running devices.

What is KaiOS plus?

This OS comes with a dedicated store for apps named ‘KaiOS Plus’. This is the default KaiOS store and it is purely based on HTML5 coding. KaiOS apps download can be done from here. Whereas, some mobile brands and manufacturers enables a different store by modifying the system OS for downloading apps. Just, in case of Jio Feature Phone, it comes with Jio Store for the users to download apps.

KaiOS App Development.

You actually need to understand the architecture and environment of KaiOS. Here, the apps are built purely with HTML/JS/CSS stack coding that means the developers can make apps of any web application/website that is mobile friendly with just minor modifications by using the inbuilt Firefox OS webIDE developer tool to build apps for KaiOS. These type of applications development allows many powerful features under the web platform, and so KaiOS uses little memory and energy, allowing it to power affordable devices with much longer battery life.

In a feature phone of about 512 RAM or something or maybe even a little more, it is not possible to run fully developed applications as we get in Google Play Store or Apple App Store. So, here the applications will be entirely web-based that means you will get the interface of the website. For example Facebook (mobile website version of facebook.com) in the app but not the exact Facebook application.

KaiOS works with chipsets from all the major manufacturers and provides developers and carriers with a range of innovative back-end services.

KaiOS Technologies Inc.

KaiOS Vs. Android. What’s the basic difference?

As already mentioned above in this article, KaiOS is being developed by Mozilla and by other external contributors. It is a new, much robust and enhanced version of the Firefox OS. This OS is purely based on the rendering engine of the Firefox web browser, Gecko and the Linux kernel. This OS works on non-touch devices. Whereas, Andriod is developed by Google developers. This particular OS is purely based on the Linux kernel. This OS works on touchscreen devices. Gestures, tapping, sliding, shaking works only with an Android OS device but not with KaiOS based device.

Android uses entirely dedicated paths for its operating system to work comfortably whereas, KaiOS is a simple format of an offline website installed in a device that renders its working based on Gecko and the Linux kernel.

Android and its installed apps need a high RAM, storage and battery life for it to be able to work properly whereas, in case the case of KaiOS, it works almost incredibly fine even with a low RAM of about 526mb  and low battery life and less storage as well.

Above all, if we see, Android is a much user-friendly OS than that of the KaiOS. The main thing here is that, if you are already an Android user you may not love KaiOS functionality and user-friendliness but, if you are not a previous user you will be wondered after using KaiOS and of course you will love it a lot.
