It is equal to smoking 10 cigarettes at once. If you go ahead and smoke right after eating, the nicotine binds to the excess oxygen that is required for digestion, allowing your body to absorb more carcinogens than usual. It increases the risk of cancer. Tobacco smoke contains more than 6000 chemicals.
- Eating fruits after meal
Undoubtedly, fresh fruits are among the healthiest foods but there is also a proper time to eat. But few of them know that fruits just after any meal can be harmful. Fruits require different enzymes to digest, and the simple sugars in fruit need time to be absorbed completely by the body. Eating fruit after a meal can cause indigestion, heartburn, burping and other discomforts. It gets stuck with the food, thus not traveling in time to the intestines. So it’s better to eat fruit on an empty stomach to allow maximum absorption.
Never go to bed after a meal nor lie down. It may cause your stomach to burn through the night, which causes discomfort, bloating, and odd sleeping patterns. It also causes heartburn, when you lie down immediately after eating your meal because the digestive juices from the stomach rise up to the food pipe. So make sure to have your meal at least 2-3 hours before going to sleep.
- Taking a Shower
Our body requires an optimal blood circulation for all the bodily functions it does. Taking shower after a meal delays digestion. It decreases the amount of blood flow in the stomach and increases the blood flow in the legs and hands. This weakens the digestive system, causing it to become inefficient, which can cause stomach pains. Digestion needs a lot of energy and blood flow in our body. So wait at least 45 minutes for the shower after having your meal.
Your body needs some time to digest food before you can exercise. Workout right after a meal can make you suffer a stomach ache or upset. Your digestive process will be disrupted which can cause vomiting, stomach puffiness, and loose motions. Wait for a few hours before you start your workout.
- Drinking tea
Drinking tea right after a meal interferes with iron absorption because tea leaves contain tannic acid which affects the digestion process. It can cause weakness, chest pain, dizziness, anemia, pale skin, and poor appetite. Therefore, drinking tea right after meals is not advisable.
However, some studies say that drinking tea helps in digestion by reducing the chances of gas formation. In case you like to go with the latter, you should opt for green tea, herbal teas or ginger tea after your meals.
