10 Weirdest things people often do while sleepwalking

Have you ever wake up in the morning knowing that you have been walking around the whole night? Have you ever wondered what you did while sleepwalking?

Well, get ready for some creepy sleepwalking tales that people actually do. According to the Standford University School of Medicine, an estimated 8.4 million people are prone to sleepwalking. While most might get up, walk around, and go back to bed without knowing it, others have had even crazier sleepwalking stories.

Below is the list of 10 weirdest things people often do while sleepwalking.

  1. Went for a drive

In 2003, after downing an Ambien and falling asleep, one Denver woman got up, chugged a few glasses of wine, and got into her car wearing only her nightshirt in the dead of January. She went on to wreck her car at an intersection, urinate in the middle of the road, and assault police officers when they tried to apprehend her. According to the FDA, there’s been an increase in sleep driving, and sleep aids such as Ambien are believed to be a factor.

  1. Eating

A recently divorced 51-year-old woman named Mary would eat in her sleep five times a week for an entire decade. Every day, she’d wake up to find a tornado of wrappers, fruit pits, and empty plastic containers. She once woke up to find she’d eaten an entire bottle of ketchup and would get in frequent trouble with her roommate because she’d eat her food at night.

  1. E-mailing

Back in 2008, researchers in Ohio reported the first-ever case of someone using the internet while asleep. The 44-year-old woman rolled out of bed, turned on her computer, connected to the internet, logged on to her email account, and fired off three emails — all during an episode of sleepwalking. The emails were even intelligible; one of them simply read: “Come tomorrow and sort this hell hole out. Dinner and drinks, 4.pm. Bring wine and caviar only.”

  1. Sleeping with strangers

An Australian couple sought medical help in 2004 when it emerged that the wife had been getting up in the middle of the night to have sex with strangers. The husband had even witnessed his partner having sex with another man while asleep. Doctors diagnosed her with a REM disorder that meant that she would act out her dreams, requiring extensive treatment to stop the midnight encounters.

Michael LaMalfa, a 28-year-old New York man, was found by police disoriented and unsteady on his feet. When asked, he claimed he was sleeping walking, having no idea how he had gotten in the neighborhood. Turns out, prior to discovering him, he had broken into several of the neighbors’ vehicles and stolen items, like a laptop, golf clubs, and a golf bag.

  1. Jumping out of the window to death

This German teenager is what you would call a sound sleeper after falling four stories, he remained asleep. The 17-year-old had recently moved into a new apartment. According to his sister, who shared the apartment with him, he was a frequent sleepwalker. But this time, he started walking only to climb atop a cardboard box and out the window.

  1. Climbing a crane

In 2005, a fifteen-year-old girl climbed a 130-foot (39 meters) crane while sleepwalking. She had been seen by a passerby curled up and fast asleep on the crane. Eventually, a fireman climbed the crane to get her but didn’t wake her for fear she’d panic and fall. Instead, they had her parents call her cell phone number and thankfully she made it safely to the ground.

A man named Dean Sokell woke up to find himself beating his wife to death with a hammer. However, once he realized what he was doing, rather than stopping, he stabbed her to silence her screams.

In 2006, a Muslim couple was forced to separate when the husband allegedly uttered “talaq” three times in his sleep or else face a social boycott by their community. They had been married for 11 years and didn’t want to divorce, but once the Muslim leaders got wind of the incident, they ruled the “talaq” had to be implemented.

A nurse by day and artist by night, Lee Hadwin create beautiful masterpieces in his sleep. When he wakes up, he has no memory of drawing or creating anything but finds the pieces nonetheless. What’s even more strange is that he has no interest or talent in art while awake.
